Hello Kitty Movie has 242 Million Dollar Budget
Sanrio, the company behind the cutesy mascot (that is actually not a cat, apparently), announced that a movie is going to made based on the character. Whilst little to no details have emerged as of yet, the main thing that stands out is that the film could have a budget between $162-$242 million.
Let’s put that in perspective. This is a film that will be mostly targeted at children, and in all likeliness will be an animation of some sort. Comparatively, Despicable Me had a budget of only $69 million. Event the gigantic budget blockbuster, The Avengers, only had a budget of $220 million. So why is the number so high? My guess, is that they are going to use this film as an extreme marketing tool, and only a small amount of that money will actually go into making the film. As it is a brand that involves everything from toys to clothes, marketing the movie will also market the products they already sell, so it is likely including much of the advertising budget they were already going to use.
Maybe I’m wrong though. Maybe it’s going to be a summer blockbuster with cutting edge CGI, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chris Pratt fighting on the moon in another dimension, in 4D. Wearing Hello Kitty shirts of course.
