52 Game Challenge: Retro Gaming – Donkey Kong Country
Cast your mind back to a brighter, sunnier yesteryear when Rare were not restricted to making shitty Kinect gimmick pieces; when they were a vibrant and exciting young team filled with some of the best creative minds the British gaming industry had to offer. Before members of Rare moved on to pastures new (Free Radical, Crytek et al) after the Microsoft acquisition, they made fun and flavourful character driven platformers and adventure games for Nintendo. Rare were their second party golden goose, firing out exciting new intellectual property like Killer Instinct, and reviving long dormant franchises like Donkey Kong. Rare were a powerhouse, their logo on a box was a symbol of quality that carried just as much weight as their parent company Nintendo’s ever did. To an extent, Rare were one of the main reasons you owned a SNES over a Mega Drive. Donkey Kong Country showed that your had picked the right hardware; a killer app that looked and sounded absolutely stunning.
This week I travel back in time, choosing Donkey Kong Country Returns as my third game in the #52gamechallenge. If I want to get this done by years end, I need to get back on the horse. Some times adult life is busy and hectic. Need to find time for those all important vidya gamez. Enjoy this weeks vlog, below.
