Delving into the world of Rust (And Getting Brutally Murdered)
In your everyday life it is rare that attempts to commune with your neighbours are met with true gestures of hostility. Most people in a simple face to face exchange are civil at the very least. But not upon the plains of the internet. Even the slightest semblance of anonymity can turn a perfectly pleasant human beings into a petulant and filthy troll.
Nowhere is this more apparent than within the world of the recently emerged ‘survival-em-up’ genre.
DayZ‘s popularity has spawned several imitators, but none come with the quite the pedigree of Rust. Gary Newman and Facepunch Studios (of Gary’s Mod fame) have set out to create their own Frankenstein’s monster of an indie title, attempting to marry the survival and social aspects of DayZ with the construction, resource management and creativity of Minecraft.
In the world of Rust the majority of people hate you and wish you dead, while the minority will flee from you for fear of death. For a game in which the primary draw is the social aspect and the interaction with other people, it is somewhat ironic that it is these people that serve as the primary barrier to entry. Rust is, much like the games it draws influence from, unwelcoming to newcomers and awfully confusing at first. However, I already expected this. But did I consult a guide or read a wiki? Of course not! I am British after all, and British tourists are renowned for their ignorance. I just hoped that if I shouted loudly enough, people would understand my intentions.
My first thirty or so minutes spent with the game are condensed into the five minute video below in which I gather wood and get brutally murdered.
