Magic: The Gathering – R.I.P. Old Friend
In Magic: The Gathering, when a new block lands in stores, a previous block rotates out of the Standard competitive environment. With Khans of Tarkir hitting shelves this Friday, rotation looms. This means that some much loved (and revered) cards are no longer legally playable in the primary competitive format. This leads to entire decks being completely unplayable as they see the loss of their important pieces.
My beloved Esper Control looses over 75% of its cards; half the mana base of Shocklands and Mutavaults, its sweeping board clearer Supreme Verdict, the card advantage in a can Sphinx’s Revelation and of course Blood Baron of Vizkopa. The Baron himself is half the reason people opt for the Esper deck over its leaner and less clunky Blue White cousin.
So sit back and revel in one last lament for the rotating deck. Or on the other hand, if you hated playing against the oppressive permission and invasive disruption, rejoice in my sorrow.
Rest in peace, sweet prince.
